GUEST SPEAKER WEEK 2: MIKE BUGEMEBE

My previous post outlined some thought starters, only a snippet of the wisdom , which Mike Bugembe shared with us.

At the start it does seem like a grim picture,

Part of the barriers and obstacles faced by minority groups within the business and tech space, is not just in the context of working in tech, but within the architecture of data that is being used to inform much of AI's decision making. More importantly though, how this is assisting in perpetuating imbalances at a global scale and mostly without any regulation (regulation being that it is picked up and the algorithm fixed).

Regulation does occur, but only on a case to case instance and not on an entire re-engineered algorithm cleanup.

Mike pointed out that AI [Artificial Intelligence] is about survival. We either sit on the side, or we become active participants. In some way or form. As leaders , we need to cultivate the skill to read it, work with it and reason with it. We must work in conjunction with it and not against it.

Critical thinking is the most important skill to have in the era of data.

AI in tech, broken down into its most simplistic form is a solution, assembled in a pattern of code or numbers and is monetised when sold as a product.

How / Where can you use AI?

Most of the time AI is used for decision making. And that’s not a terrible thing. this is the backbone of society and with the right intention, it can be put to use as a tool of powerful, positive change at scale, in rapid timing.

I am still of the belief that we can, we have and we will still use tech to help further humanity and solve for human problems.

AI can be the solution not the problem. Like all decisions, intent behind any action taken is going to be the result or circumstances that we experience.
